**High Court Bans Sleeper Buses on Roads; BRTA to Regulate**
In a significant ruling, the High Court has prohibited sleeper buses from operating on roads, rejecting an application by the Sleeper Bus Owners’ Association seeking permission to run such services. The court, headed by Chief Justice K. M. Hafizul Alam on Wednesday (September 9), issued the directive, stating that only buses permitted by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will be allowed to ply the roads.
During the hearing, BRTA’s lawyer, Mohammad Rafiul Islam, referred to Section 40 of the Road Transport Act 2018, which outlines technical specifications. Violations of these specifications, he argued, constitute offenses under Section 80-84, punishable by up to three years imprisonment and a Tk. 3 lakh fine.
Furthermore, the lawyer emphasized that the Road Transport Act clearly stipulates that no vehicle can operate on roads without a route permit.
